And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’ “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue for I am tormented in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. Gehenna is when final judgement (the Great White Throne Judgement) occurs, where the unrighteous will be thrown into the Lake of Fire (the second death). ![]() After the resurrection, people go to heaven or hell, those who believe go to heaven, those who do not go to hell. Jesus also called this Paradise, as He did when talking to the thief on the cross). Abraham’s bosom is where the righteous go (before Jesus’ resurrection when He declares victory over death and Hades). In the story of Lazarus, Hades is a place of torment for the wicked and unrighteous. Several words have been used in the Bible to describe where one goes when they die. Also, keep in mind I am no expert, but this is just my take based on what I have read in the Bible. Keep in mind this is prior to Jesus’ death and resurrection. ![]() ![]() In this second part of our discussion about the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, we get a small glimpse of heaven and hell.
